Things to consider before purchasing a wind turbine

The amount of wind at your site
If you live in the U.S., you can estimate the wind source in your area by referring to the wind resource maps provided by the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Powering America Program.

The zoning requirements and covenants in your area
You can find out about the zoning restrictions in your area by contacting the local building inspector, board of supervisors, and/or planning board.

Estimating appliance and home electronic energy use
Knowing your electricity usage is a must before installing a wind turbine. 
Following steps below.
1. Find wattage of the product
 
2. Estimate of time used
3. Find the daily energy consumption by using this formula
   
(Wattage × Hours Used Per Day) ÷ 1000 = Daily Kilowatt-hour (kWh) consumption
4. Find the annual energy consumption by using this formula
    
Daily kWh consumption × number of days used per year = annual energy consumption
​5. Find the annual cost to run the appliance by using this formula
    
Annual energy consumption × utility rate per kWh = annual cost to run appliance
